For the purpose of this debate, two dominant dating models exist.
The situationship model prioritizes personal independence and self-development/fulfillment. People tend to have multiple, long, non-exclusive/low-commitment arrangements throughout their lives. The focus is on 'living in the moment', with little consideration given to the future of the relationship.
Comparatively, the marriage model prioritizes dating seriously from the get go, with the intention of finding 'the one' and committing to each other. People tend to have fewer, higher-commitment relationships where the primary goal is to find a marriage partner. Families and communities are typically more involved in marriage decisions.
